Club Med Cancun Yucatan
the best family vacation spot in Caribbean Mexico?
Could be!!

Club Med Cancun Beach

Club Med - the inventors of the "inclusive" concept.

  • Do they have anything special to offer to families?
  • And doesn't everyone else now offer the same thing for less money?

The answers to those questions are a resounding YES, and an equally emphatic NO!

Two weeks ago my family spent what I think we are agreed was our best vacation week ever at the recently completely renovated Club Med Cancun Yucatan. Please read on, and check out the pictures to find out why...

Robinson Family
Some of the " Strange Family Robinson"

First a bit of background, for those that don't know us...
My family (2 adults and 3 kids aged 7, 4 and 1) has been very lucky in as far as everywhere we have gone as a family in the past few years has been carefully chosen to be some of the best family travel experiences available, and each of the last vacations has had something unique to offer. To be completely fair, both the Disney Cruise and FDR resorts offer excellent quality products that are highly recommended.

Club Med is just... different!
You can't compare a cruise vacation with a resort stay. You especially can't compare anything Disney with anything else! FDR resorts have vacation nannies, not offered anywhere else, and for families with small kids this can make all the difference...

Still, Club Med Cancun Yucatan sure was fun and I highly recommend it for almost all families!

In a nutshell...

PROs

  • Great activities - for all ages
  • Awesome kids/teen programming morning 'til night - completely age-appropriate from 4-18
  • The entire resort was what I describe as "effortlessly trilingual" (English, French & Spanish) - just ideal for Canadians and their kids (whichever official language they prefer)
  • Gourmet dining available at every meal, even (especially?) the buffets
  • Very comfortable accommodations - many with connecting rooms
  • Wonderful, energetic staff - the Club Med G.O.s, despite their 14-hour work days, are always enthusiastic, pleasant, full of energy and ready to help you enjoy every minute of your stay, whether being active, or actively lounging on the beach!
  • Great beaches (4 of them) - in probably the best location on the Cancun strip
  • Lots of shade and beach chairs! - a small detail maybe, but those of you that have had to deal with too few beach chairs (hogged by early-bird tourists and their towels) will really appreciate this! And the chairs and sitting areas with the sun-sail-shades not only looked beautiful, but were very practical in the strong Cancun sun
  • Excellent, entertaining, semi-professional shows, many involving the children - wonderful for parents
  • Many architectural and decorative touches that just underlined the fact that you were in a high-end resort
  • Opportunity to stay in extraordinary suites and concierge level rooms, for those that appreciate even more of the added-extras

CONs

  • Price - unless you book early, or on one of the special promotions, Club Med resorts are more expensive than many other resorts (but you do get what you pay for!)

That's about it for the cons! You would really have to go looking to try to find things to complain about. The atmosphere and general happiness rating of the many guests that we spoke with (us included) was second to none! For those who have experienced Disney staff, you will recognise some of the same kind of energy and attention to detail shown by the Club Med G.O.s too.

Before we get too much further - what the heck is a G.O.? Well the phrase is from the French "gentil organiseur" (literally "nice organiser"). The G.O.s are the staff that do all the activities (sporting, entertainment, kids club, front desk etc). To a person, they were all young, pretty/handsome, energetic and really made our stay extra-nice...

Now let's get into some details.
